Vision and Hearing
Vision and hearing screening is done the first semester of the year. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they have their glasses at school. A lot of learning is lost if your child can’t see clearly.
If your child fails the screening, the nurse will rescreen the child inpidually in the clinic, then a letter will be sent home in your child tuesday folder. If you are unable to have your child seen by an eye doctor for a check-up due to financial difficulties, please contact the school nurse, as there are programs to help your child.
AN- Acanthosis Nigricans
We will be screening 1 st , 3rd, 5th grade for the (AN) acanthosis nigricans marker, a skin condition that signals high insulin levels.Which can be a precursor to Type II Diabetes (which is on the rise in teenagers in the U.S.) Students who are positively identified with the marker will undergo additional assessment of body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure. Parents will be alerted of their child's risk factors and will be encouraged to undergo further medical evaluation from a health professional.
5th grade screenings
Spinal screenings will be done on all of our 5th graders in a private setting. A letter will be sent home with the students indicating the exact date. If abnormalities were detected,a referral letter will be sent with student regarding the need to follow up with your child’s physician.
